Tire Speed Ratings Are Easier to Understand

What are tire speed ratings and why are they so important? Many tire buyers have asked this question and understanding the answer can help you the next time you buy a set of replacement tires for your car or truck.

The importance of tire speed ratings can be summed up quite simply. Tires are manufactured to a wide variety of specifications that meet, or exceed, certain levels of performance. The standard tires that will perform best on a Ford Focus, will not get the job done on a Chevrolet Corvette. Conversely, a Corvette tire will far exceed the needs of a Focus.

If you look closely enough you will notice there is a fair amount of information imprinted onto the side of your tire. Among this information is the speed rating, which is generally listed by a letter that follows the tire size and load index. For example, your tire may include this set of numbers and letters: P205/55R-15 88V. The P means passenger tire, 205/55 is the width and aspect ratio of the tire and the R designates this as a radial tire. The number 15 indicates that this tire fits 15 inch diameter wheels Autel Maxisys MS908CV, 88 is the load index and V is the speed index. All tire manufacturers in the world adhere to a universal system of rating.

The whole idea of a speed rating may seem unnecessary in the United States, where our "legal" speed limits max out at 70mph, but in truth speed ratings were born overseas in Europe to meet the needs of the infamous German autobahn. Here posted speeds are not listed as maximum limits, but minimum requirements for the lane you choose to occupy. As vehicles became capable of higher and higher speeds, tire manufacturers realized that different tire grades were necessary to avoid catastrophic high-speed blowouts.

Speed ratings are determined through lab testing. Essentially, it involves pressing a tire at its appropriate load against a large, high-speed metal drum, and then gradually increasing running speed until the required speed rating has been reached. The chart below lists the tire speed ratings and the maximum speed for that rating:

M: 81mph (130 km/h) N: 87 mph (140 km/h) P: 93 mph (150 km/h) Q: 99 mph (160 km/h) R: 106 mph (170 km/h) S: 112 mph (180 km/h) T: 118 mph (190 km/h) U: 124 mph (200 km/h) H: 130 mph (210 km/h) V: 149 mph (240 km/h) W: 168 mph (270 km/h) Y: 186 mph (300 km/h) (Y): 186+ mph (300 km/h)

As you can probably guess, the speed ratings were originally created in kilometers-per-hour, thus the odd miles-per-hour increments. Also, there are two Y ratings; the Y rating enclosed in parentheses (Y) indicates that it has been tested in excess of 186 mph.

When you shop for replacement tires make sure you select a speed rated tire that meets your driving requirements. Naturally, you must be careful when driving not to exceed the rated speed of your tires. And also keep in mind that even though tire manufacturers market and sell tires capable of high speeds, they do not condone the use of their products in excess of legal speed limits. Don't try explaining to the officer that pulls you over for speeding that you thought you were allowed to go faster because your tires were capable of such excessive speeds Autel MaxiSys MS906TS.

Speed ratings are only effective when tires have not been damaged, altered in some fashion, are not overloaded and are properly inflated. Even if a tire has been repaired due to a puncture or other damage, it no longer retains the original speed rating because the manufacturer cannot control the quality of the repair.

Finally, although speed ratings do not indicate tire handling capabilities, a higher speed rating may translate to different handling characteristics. This is important to note if you buy a new set of tires with a lower speed rating. Make sure you are familiar with the handling characteristics of your car or truck and make the necessary driving adjustments to allow for the lower speed rating.

Tips On How To Change Oil

Some people in life like to get their hands dirty, and others just like to spend money Autel Maxisys MS908CV. If you make the decision to change oil yourself in your vehicle, be prepared to get dirty, greasy and wear a little oil. You will get your tools dirty and will sweat in a hot garage for about half an hour.

Other motorists will simply take it to one of those convenient 15 minute chains that specialize in catering to don't like to change oil. It's clean, it's fast and for the most part, it's professionally handled. It usually costs around $30 but sometimes you can touch a special like I did and pay $19.95. If you are seeing private mechanic it's a good idea to know his qualifications. Sometimes if you pay a mechanic to change oil he will do the job for a fair price—but then later you find out there's an oil leak. Oil leak if you're lucky! I know one individual that had shoddy work then which led to major mechanical failure.

When hiring a mechanic, make sure good communication is established, a set price including labor, parts and any extra services, and that the mechanic is reliable and respected in the community. Does he have many satisfied customers? You can usually tell this volume of work he's currently doing.

Along with the worry of hiring a good mechanic, the $30 charge is simply too much for some drivers and they decide to change oil in their vehicle for free—with just a little bit of effort and one spent afternoon. If in fact you to decide to do it yourself you can expect to save a few dollars and you will have the satisfaction of learning a new skill.

There are other issues to consider when you decide to change oil in your car yourself. Are you equipped with the proper tools? Do you actually know what you're doing? While you can learn how to change oil over the Internet, to do it properly takes study and practice. Don't skimp on $30 if it means sending someone unqualified to do a professional's job. Don't make your car so for this because you're looking to save a few dollars. Realize that in the end it could cost you a whole lot more if it's not done right.

Another thing to think about is proper oil disposal. The safest way to dispose of your oil is to keep it properly contained and find a local shop to take it off your hands Autel Diaglink. The wrong way to do it is to pour it down a sewer or just throw it in the trash can. The EPA can give out large fines for improper oil disposal.

Would you like to know how to change oil yourself? Maybe you can find a mechanic friend that will show you or take a shop class at a local community college. While simple instructions can be found online, it's a procedure you really have to understand and perform correctly if you want your car to run an optimal order.

The Year Of The Hybrid

Every once in a while a life-changing product is introduced yet it's potential is lost on the public and it's viewed as a novelty or fad. It took 10 years for anyone to become interested in the invention of the photocopier. Perhaps the only people that can see the full potential of an invention are the people who designed it. When the telephone was introduced a mayor of one American City stated, "I can see the time when every city will have one." Looking back it's easy to see how some people aren't forward thinkers.

Just a few years ago many industry pundits viewed hybrids as an over-priced fad. At the time America's appetite for large SUV's was only getting stronger leaving no love hybrids. Though no one could argue that hybrids were better for the environment and far more fuel efficient, consumers were interested in fully loaded Ford Explorers. With oil at $40 a barrel, nobody was interested in paying thousands more for a vehicle that got better fuel mileage. It's taken some time (the Prius is almost 10 years old) but the hybrid movement has finally caught on with mainstream consumers. How times have changed over the last 5 years. Sales of the Ford Explorer were down 42% in April while sales of the Ford Escape Hybrid were up 68%. With gas flirting at $3.00 a gallon consumers are more interested in hybrids then ever before. So interested that automakers are having a difficult time keep up with demand autel maxisys ms906.

As gas prices continue to move upward and onward, hybrids save their owners more money. According to the EPA, a V6 Ford Escape driven 15,000 miles a year will use $2085 worth of unleaded regular (at $2 Autel Diaglink.91 a gallon). The Escape Hybrid will use $1415 worth of fuel, an annual saving of $670. Assuming gas prices stay the same, it'll only take about 3 years to recoup the cost. And if gas prices go up (which is very likely), you'll save even more money. But the deal is even sweeter with a variety of tax incentives for those who purchase a hybrid vehicle. And many cities allow hybrids to use the carpool lanes. This can be priceless (the good kind) if you live in a busy urban area, or priceless (the bad kind) if you don't.

Not everyone is sold on hybrids. Some people think of hybrids as being slow and underpowered. That couldn't be further from the truth. The Honda Accord goes 0-60mph in less than 7 seconds. In fact, the Accord Hybrid is the most powerful Accord ever built. The Toyota Highlander produces 268hp and can achieve 60 mph in 7.3 seconds, not bad for a 7 seat SUV. And let's not forget the upcoming Lexus GS450h. It makes more than 330hp and goes 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds, making it one of the fastest luxury sedans on the planet. Hybrids actually have an advantage when it comes to acceleration. The electric motors produce their maximum output from a very low speed, unlike a typical gasoline internal combustion engine that produces power at higher rpm's.

Other than a few laggards, most people can see the virtues of owning a hybrid. Great fuel economy, fewer emissions, and the warm fuzzy feeling that goes with doing something good for Mother Nature. The acceptance of hybrids is long overdue but like many great inventions, we're only now seeing the potential. I wonder what those industry pundits have to say?

The Rise and Fall of Porsche in Formula One

The Rise and Fall of Porsche in Formula One

The Porsche have not been that successful when it came to Formula one racing. However when Porsche first entered into races they astonished the world with their performance But when they got into Formula one they got some very mixed results. The season that started in 1961 and ran through to 1962 Porsche was a constructor but they only managed to scrape one win which was in a championship race and then a week later they one again but this was not in a championship race autel ds808. And at the end of the season Porsche decided to give it up as a bad job and due to financial pressures they just could not see it as a viable option Formula one is the most expensive sport to get into and well you need to be producing some results to enable you to get some sponsorship and well Porsche just was not doing that x431 pro mini.

Porsche made a come back in 1983 to Formula one however this time they were only supplying engines and not actually competing. The engines were badged up as TAG and they were for the McClaren team and boy this combination was a success, the Porsche powered Mc Clarens won two constructor championships and they took three driver crowns this was a success for both Mc Claren and Porsche, this is what Porsche needed to prove themselves to the world that they can compete at the high level and best of all this also showed to the world that the engines are reliable and quick and well if you own a prestigious sports car company then this can only increase your popularity.

With in ten years Porsche decided to give it another go and in 1991 hey started supplying engines to Footwork and the results were a joke. The Footwork team didn't even score a single point throughout the whole season but not only that they didn't even get to qualify for half the races and since 1991 Porsche has not competed in Formula one. However from what I remember the Footwork cars were sold off to the lower Formulas like Formula Two and they were incredible cars as I know a guy who competed in an old Porsche Powered Footwork

However Porsche do still have a big racing background around the world but these are normally by amateur enthusiast drivers who do it for fun at the weekends these guys and girls have a big wallets that have to be full of cash as racing is exceptionally expensive and this only helps Porsche as the supply of new parts is always needed especially when cars get written off on a regular basis launch x431 v+. The Porsche Michelin Super Cup is the only professional race and they only go and support the European Formula one events so although Porsche only had a short lived success in Formula One they still have a big racing following.

The Number One Used Car Buying Mistake

As a master automotive technician and the owner of an auto repair shop, the number one mistake my customers make when purchasing a car is not bringing it to me to be inspected before they purchase Autel MaxiCOM MK808.

The majority of my customers bring me the vehicle after they have already paid for the vehicle. The Federal Trade Commission requires automotive dealers to place a ...quot;Buyer's Guide...quot; sticker on every used vehicle for sale or risk facing stiff fines and penalties. However, most dealers realize that placing the "Buyer's Guide" sticker on the window and marking "As is, No Warranty" is largely a benefit for the dealer. Especially when most commercially produced forms and the form available for download from FTC.gov have a signature box for the buyer to acknowledge having read and received a copy of this form. This has saved Dealerships more hassles in small claims court than any other regulation, in my opinion.

The side effect of this form and not having the vehicle inspected prior to purchase is that my auto repair customers who bring the vehicle in for inspection are often shocked at what I find wrong with the vehicle.

For example, numerous SUV's with higher mileage (over 50,000 miles) often need suspension work due to the heavier unsprung weight on the suspension due to heavier control arms, axle shafts Autel MaxiTPMS PAD, locking hubs, and other off-road components. It is common for the four wheel drive vehicles to need upper and lower ball joints, a pitman arm, and an idler arm just to properly align the vehicle. These repairs can often cost nearly $1,000 for a vehicle in otherwise good condition.

However, if the customer had brought me the vehicle prior to purchase, this problem could have been dealt with as part of the negotiation at the dealership since I provide the customer with a written inspection form and a reasonable estimate for the repairs. If the dealership refuses to negotiate, the customer will generally look for another vehicle.

Most auto repair shops will perform vehicle inspections, generally charging an hour of labor to properly perform a thorough inspection. The reason that customers do not request a used vehicle inspection seems to be lack of awareness. It just never occurred to the customer to have the vehicle inspected prior to purchase.

The problem probably lies in the average repair shop's failure to properly market this service to their repair customers. It provides a strong opportunity for the repair shop to build relationships with their customers Autel MaxiDiag MD808, while providing a valuable service for the customer.

Derek is a Master Automotive Technician with over a dozen years experience in the business of buying, selling, repairing, and maintaining vehicles. He owns his own shop in Mid-Michigan, and also maintains a car advice blog at
